A pan-Yoruba group, the Egbe Omo Yoruba Parapo, has called for the immediate and unconditional release of the High Commissioner for the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC), Dr Adejare Adegbenro being detained by the police.
SaharaReporters reported on May 4 that a coalition of Civil Society Networks expressed worry over the whereabouts of Adegbenro after he honoured an invitation sent to him by the Nigeria Police Force.
Since then, the police authorities have refused to release him or charge him, if he had committed a crime.
Adegbenro has been in police detention since April 26, 2024.
However, in a statement on Tuesday, signed by its Southwest Coordinator and Secretary, Prof Olatunji Babatunde and Hon. Bunmi Babayejun respectively, Egbe Omo Yoruba Parapo described the incarceration of Adegbenro by the police without charging him with any crime as illegal and unjustifiable.
The group which seeks to represent the cultural and social interests of Yoruba people in Southwest Nigeria, described Adegbenro as a pivotal figure in the growth and development of the Yoruba race, particularly in Ogun State, where “his contributions have significantly impacted our community's progress and prosperity”.
The group described Adegbenro’s detention as not only violating his fundamental rights but also disrupting his work for his people.
It said, "As a committed advocate for peace, justice, and mutual understanding among diverse groups, his absence is keenly felt and impedes ongoing efforts towards communal harmony and progress.
"We, the Egbe Omo Yoruba Parapo, therefore, implore the relevant authorities to swiftly intervene and ensure the immediate release of Ambassador Otunba Adejare Adegbenro. His unwavering commitment to service and his unblemished record of integrity and dedication to our collective well-being underscore the urgency of this appeal."
The group urged all stakeholders, including governmental bodies, civil society organisations, and the media, to join them in demanding justice and fairness for Adegbenro.
"Together, let us uphold the principles of rule of law, human rights, and dignity for all individuals irrespective of their status or affiliations," it said.
