Viral flu, also called influenza, is an infection of the nose, throat and lungs, which are part of the respiratory system. The flu is caused by a virus.

A journalist with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), Daniel Ojukwu, abducted by the Nigerian police on Wednesday, May 1, and detained for 10 days on the order of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has lamented that he is still battling viral flu five days after his release from the police custody.

Ojukwu wrote on X platform, “Uhm, good day, egbon Muyiwa @Princemoye1. I'm still battling viral flu.”

Viral flu, also called influenza, is an infection of the nose, throat and lungs, which are part of the respiratory system. The flu is caused by a virus.

Ojukwu was secretly abducted in Lagos by the police over his November 2023 report, which alleged that Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, paid N147million  (US$106,154) of government money for school construction into a restaurant’s bank account.

Despite being asthmatic, Ojukwu languished in police custody at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Area 10, Abuja, for 10 days without access to his medication and doctor.

He is being investigated by the National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) for alleged Cybercrime violation following a petition from Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to then-President Muhammadu Buhari.

However, fact emerged that Ojukwu’s arrest by the police was sequel to a petition written by Muiz Banire, a popular Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and founder of the United Action For Change.

Banire was a former national legal adviser of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was appointed by President Bola Tinubu as the Lagos State Commissioner for Special Duties in 1999.

His petition was in relation to FIJ’s coverage of financial mismanagement in the office of Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, senior special assistant to the president on sustainable development goals (SSAP-SDGs).

Ojukwu was released a day after a coalition of civil society groups under the aegis of Action Group for the Protection of Civic Actors and a human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, staged a protest at the Force Headquarters in Abuja to demand his freedom.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of operations, DIG Ayuba Ede, revealed that Ojukwu’s release was at the discretion of the IGP Egbetokun.
