SaharaReporters reported on May 7 that the combined security operatives led by the Nigeria Police Force burnt down Igga community in Uzo-Uwani local government area of Enugu State, killing some villagers.

The Enugu State government on Monday demolished properties worth millions in a farm settlement after the Nigerian police and the army had burnt down part of the village located in Igga community, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area.

SaharaReporters reported on May 7 that the combined security operatives led by the Nigeria Police Force burnt down Igga community in Uzo-Uwani local government area of Enugu State, killing some villagers.

It had been reported that the attack in the community followed the killing of two policemen and three members of the Enugu State Neighbourhood Watch Group by rampaging hoodlums.

During the attack, the security operatives killed one villager in what had been described as a reprisal attack on the community.

Meanwhile, after arresting several leaders of the community on the instructions of the state governor, Mr Peter Mbah, the police and military returned on Tuesday last week and burnt down at least 23 houses after looting the community.

However, the Mbah-led administration on Monday ordered the complete demolition of what was left of the settlement on Monday morning.

A resident of the community who simply gave his name as Ossia Joshua faulted the directive of the governor to demolish the settlement.

He said, "The Enugu state government is carrying out demolition at Uzo-uwani in Adani Adarice farm settlement area. The government is currently demolishing houses, Warehouse, at Adarice market square with bulldozers, after the Nigeria police burnt four warehouses, offices and residential houses at the Adarice market square."

Lamenting, Ossia described the demolition as heartless, wondering "Why would Governor Peter Mbah order the demolition of people's businesses and means of livelihood in such brutal and senseless manner? Did we made mistake electing him? Whose interest is he championing in Enugu State?"
