The State Governor had also revealed his willingness to sign a death sentence for the suspect.

Eighteen people out of the 25 victims of the Gezawa Mosque attack in Kano State have been confirmed dead.

A source privy to the situation said this on Thursday, adding that seven others are still in the hospital receiving treatment, according to Daily Post.

Last week, SaharaReporters reported how the Kano State Police Command confirmed the death of eight of the victoms.

The police had also arrested the suspect, Shafiu Abubakar, 38, who confessed that his actions were in revenge over a disputed inheritance, claiming he had been cheated.

A resident of the village, Rabiu Gadan, had confirmed that 11 people had so far died due to the injuries they suffered and that the funeral of eight of them had already been conducted while the corpses of the remaining three were being prepared for burial.

Gadan said the attack was not Abubakar’s first violent outburst as he had previously assaulted two of his older brothers and then surrendered himself to the police claiming he had killed them.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, who confirmed the number of deaths late Wednesday, said seven more victims died while receiving treatment at the facility.

The State Governor had also revealed his willingness to sign a death sentence for the suspect.

He added the incident was neither extremism nor politically motivated.

Speaking during the visit, Yusuf said, “Whatever the court decides, we will ensure that the victims of the Gadan village arson get justice and if it condemns him to death after finding him guilty, we will not hesitate to sign the death warrant.”

He added, “For the avoidance of any doubt, the incendiarism that led to the death of 15 out of the 24 victims was neither politically motivated nor a terrorist attack on the residents of the state.”

The governor donated N100,000 to each of the victims.
