Anene was shot dead by the officer on Wednesday, close to Haj Estate, where the deceased lived with his young wife and daughter, after a minor incident involving a motorcyclist.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth C. Igweh, has ordered an immediate investigation into the killing of an Abuja resident identified as Onyebuchi Anene by an officer of the FCT Police Command.
Anene was shot dead by the officer on Wednesday, close to Haj Estate, where the deceased lived with his young wife and daughter, after a minor incident involving a motorcyclist.
Confirming the incident, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, in a statement on Friday, said that the trigger-happy officer has been remanded in custody.
Describing the shooting as accidental discharge, Adeh said, “In response to the tragic and unprecedented incident that resulted in the untimely demise of one Oyebuchi Anene, of Byazhin Abuja on May 22, 2024, at about 9:45 pm, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, has directed the DC Criminal Investigation Department to commence an immediate and discreet investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the deceased.
“While the police officer responsible for the accidental discharge is in custody, the CP expresses profound and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the public at large.
“He unequivocally condemns the unprofessional and disheartening conduct of the police officer and assures family and the public of swift justice.
“Further development will be communicated in due course.”
