One of the policemen, who talked with SaharaReporters exclusively on Monday, accused the officers at the Inspectorate Promotion Board of requiring all Inspectors who requested to be promoted to Officer Cadre to pay N30,000 as a condition for interview.

Some Nigerian policemen within the rank of the Inspector cadre have lamented how senior officers within the force are extorting them before granting them interviews for promotion.

One of the policemen, who talked with SaharaReporters exclusively on Monday, accused the officers at the Inspectorate Promotion Board of requiring all Inspectors who requested to be promoted to Officer Cadre to pay N30,000 as a condition for interview.

He said the interview exercise was slated to commence on 6th of June, 2024 but the senior officers are compelling the applicants to pay N30,000 without any means of accountability for the money.

“Here in Lagos, they are forcing us to pay the sum of N30,000 for the promotion. This is an act of extortion from police officers to other officers. You can’t even refuse not to pay. They will force you to pay,” the source told SaharaReporters.

He continued: “The thing is happening nationwide, all the zones. Our senior officers are extorting us because of promotion. The money is around N20,000 to N30,000. For instance in Kogi, the officers are asked to pay N20,000.”

The Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi did not give his reaction to these allegations despite several efforts made by SaharaReporters to reach him.

He did not pick up repeated calls and yet to respond to text messages and WhatsApp chats seeking his comments on the issue.
