Transmission Company Reconstructs Four Towers Supplying Power To Northeast Nigeria, Vandalised By Terrorists
June 4, 2024

The Transmission Company of Nigeria on Tuesday announced the completion of four vandalised towers along the Jos-Gombe 330kV transmission line, which supply power to the northeast region of the country.

This announcement was made in a circular issued by Ndidi Mbah, TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, and dated June 4, 2024.

The statement reads: “The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announces that the rehabilitation and re-stringing of the four vandalized towers along the Jos-Gombe 330kV transmission line supplying bulk power to substations in the Northeast have been completed.

“The re-stringing of conductors was completed yesterday 3rd June, 2024, and contractors have reconnected the jumper on tower 282, making it ready for the transmission of bulk electricity.

“Recall that when the vandalized towers were discovered on April 22, 2024. TCN promptly mobilized contractors and TCN supervising engineers to the site of the incident to immediately commence repairs.

“Initially, TCN had promised to complete the repairs and restore supply by May 27, 2024. However, the collapse of the fourth tower during the re-stringing process delayed the completion. The four towers have since been completed, and the line is now ready for bulk power transmission.

“TCN appreciates the patience and support of the governors and people in the North Eastern part of the nation during the period of the tower reconstruction work.”

The agency had earlier announced that one of the four new towers erected by TCN contractors along the Jos – Gombe 330kV transmission, collapsed on May 28.

It also lamented that due to vandalism, three additional towers collapsed along Bui-Damboa 132kV transmission line.

The transmission company explained that the unfortunate incident occurred at about 7 am on May 27, 2024, while the contractor was stringing the cable on the last tower, which was supposed to enable the final joining of the power cable in time for energising the line.

Earlier in May, the Yobe State government in Northeast Nigeria organised prayer sessions against the incessant destruction of electricity towers in some parts of the state by Boko Haram terrorists.

It was gathered that the terrorists had recently been targeting the towers which connected Yobe and Borno states to the national grid.

The towers are part of the Jos - Gombe grid serving Borno and Yobe states with electricity.
