The House of Representatives may suspend Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere, the Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Downstream over the alleged politicisation of oversight function in Rivers State.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, during Thursday's plenary session in Abuja, Representative Yusuf Gagdi (APC-Plateau) raised a motion of personal explanation, stating that his privileges as a House member had been violated.

He expressed concern over a media report that claimed around 50 House members visited Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara in a show of solidarity.

Gagdi attributed the report to Ugochinyere and deemed it offensive, as it implied the House was taking a political stance.

He clarified that the members were in Rivers for an oversight function and merely paid a courtesy visit to the governor, not representing the House.

Following the visit, Ugochinyere's statement to the media implied that the lawmakers' visit was an official delegation from the House, which Gagdi disputed.

However, Representative Mark Essien (PDP-Akwa-Ibom) considered the matter trivial and urged the House to focus on more pressing national issues.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, ruled that the House leadership would review the report and potentially refer it to the Privilege and Ethics Committee for further investigation if necessary.

Some members sought to discuss the matter further, but Kalu disallowed it, citing that personal explanations are not debatable.
