The six state governors from the Nigerian South-West region have renewed their call for the creation of state police.

The governors mentioned this during their meeting after electing Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the new chair of the forum following the demise of Rotimi Akeredolu, former governor of Ondo.

The governors said there had been relative peace in the south-west because of the collaboration between Amotekun and security agencies.

The Governors’ Forum said, “We, however, encourage the Federal Government to rehabilitate other federal infrastructure in the region.

“On security, the Forum commends the relative peace in the South-West region and notes the collaboration between all security agencies and the Amotekun Corps.

"We reaffirm our full support for State Police. We acknowledge the efforts of the Federal Government to strengthen food security.

“We decide that Commissioners for Agriculture of all the South-West states should begin to meet and set up a working template, which will ensure collaboration based on each State’s comparative advantage.”

In February, SaharaReporters had reported how the Nigerian Government and the 36 state governors agreed to create state police to curb insecurity in the country.

Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, on Thursday, told State House correspondents that there was a discussion “around the issue of state police”.

“The federal government and the state governments are mulling the possibility of setting up state police,” he said, adding that it was “still going to be further discussed”.

He described the discussion along the line as a major shift considering that the Nigerian government under previous administrations had vehemently opposed the idea of state police.

Idris had said there would be more meetings and work done to achieve it.
