Nigerians overwhelmingly favoured N100,000 as the minimum amount as minimum wage for workers with 87% voting in favour in a poll conducted by the Governance Advancement Initiative for Nigeria (GAIN).

The initiative in a statement on Monday by Dr Malcolm Fabiyi, announcing the poll results, said that respondents also expressed their support to back the organised labour in any form of demonstrations to ensure N100,000 was implemented as an irreducible minimum.

According to the statement, 1460 respondents from across the six geopolitical zones participated in the polls, that was recently done by GAIN to assess the performance of government at the national and state levels after one year of the new democratic dispensation.

It noted that respondents were asked for their views on two labour related minimum wage issues to which they made their preferences.

The first question posed according to the statement was for respondents to select the level of minimum wage that they believed would be sustainable and bring about an improvement in the conditions of workers without crippling the economy.

"Respondents were provided with nine (9) monthly wage levels from which they were asked to select one, as the new national minimum wage. These wage levels are – N452K, N300K, N250K, N150K, N100K, N75K, N62K, N45K and N30K.

"The wage levels were selected because they have all been either proposed and/or offered as options during the ongoing negotiations between governments at the federal and state levels, and the organised labour unions.

"The results from the survey were N452K (7.5% of respondents), N300K (4.7%), N250K (14.8%), N150K (31.2%), N100K (28.6%), N75K (7.8%), N62K (2.7%), N45K (1.4%) and N30K (1.2%). This implies that 87% of Nigerians support a minimum wage of at least N100K per month, while a slight majority of 58% support a minimum wage of at least N150K," the statement noted.

The second labour related question posed according to the statement was about whether respondents would support demonstrations by the labour union to advance demands for a higher minimum wage.

"85% of respondents indicated that they would support such demonstrations.

"The results overwhelmingly indicate that Nigerians are solidly aligned with the agitations of the labour union for a higher minimum wage and are willing to fight for its actualisation."

"The results also indicate that Nigerians are mindful of the potential impact that higher minimum wages can have on businesses and the overall economy and have reasonable and practical expectations for wage levels that will be sustainable."
