The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest to SaharaReporters on Thursday, noting that the mechanics were brought in for questioning.

The General Manager of the New Towns Development Authority (NTDA) in Lagos State, Olakunle John Aboyeji, has allegedly ordered the arrest and detention of at least six mechanics in the state after accusing them of theft.

SaharaReporters gathered that the mechanics simply identified as; Aluko, Computer, Iyana, Damose, Wale and Chairman are being detained at the Nigerian Police Area command in Ikeja, Lagos.

One of the Mechanics who said they are working at Folawewo Lane, off Allen Avenue in lkeja, Lagos State told SaharaReporters that Aboyeji arrested their collegues on Wednesday around 2pm after his car was burgled by a hoodlum.

"We just finished working and we sat down just to rest, someone came and told us that the GM's car that was parked somewhere far from us was burgled. We were not even aware that any car was parked there.

"We were told that the thief broke the car glass and removed the car brain box, while the car started making noise because of the alarm fixed on it.

"When the MD came out of his office, he ordered the police to arrest some of us. They have been in the detention in Area F since yesterday 2pm," he said.

A woman who spoke with SaharaReporters on phone when a call was put through to the NTDA office in an effort to hear from Olakunle John Aboyeji promised to call back, which she never did.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest to SaharaReporters on Thursday, noting that the mechanics were brought in for questioning.

"It's a standard procedure; there was a case of car theft, all the people in area were brought in for questioning to throw light on what happened. They have written statements; they are being release on bail while investigation is ongoing," he added.

The mechanics were still in custody after over an hour that Benjamin Hundeyin told SaharaReporters that they were being granted bail, according to a source.

"They have not been released; they are still in detention, in fact we went to beg the GM to please release our colleagues, but he told us frankly that nobody's father can release them, stressing that not even President Tinubu," the source said.
