The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a young Nigerian in the university town of Nsukka in the Nsukka Local Government Area of the state when policemen fought publicly over sex worker.

SaharaReporters reported on June 25, that a trigger-happy police officer from the Nsukka Urban Police Division had shot and killed a young man, identified as Amuche Chinedu Ede, on Echara Road in Nsukka.

SaharaReporters gathered that the incident occurred on Sunday night.

According to eyewitnesses, a group of plainclothes police officers were out for a night of relaxation when the incident occurred.

The trouble reportedly started when one of the officers began dancing with a woman, suspected to be a sex worker, in front of a bar.

The woman allegedly accused the officer of groping her breasts while they were dancing, leading to an altercation that ended in the officer shooting Amuche.

The officer's identity has not been released.

But reacting to the incident after SaharaReporters’ report, the state police commissioner, Kanayo Uzuegbu confirmed the incident, while consoling the family and friends of the victim.

Uzuegbu, who spoke through the command's spokesman DSP Daniel Ndukwe in statement released on Thursday, assured the family that necessary actions will be taken to ensure that justice prevails.

He, however, ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough and expeditious investigation to unravel the circumstances of the “alleged shooting and murder of one Chinedu Edeh ‘m’, by a police officer at Echara Road, Nsukka, in Nsukka L.G.A., on June 23, 2024”.

"He charges the Deputy Commissioner to ensure that everyone, especially the police officer alleged to have shot the victim, found culpable faces the full weight of the law," the statement said.

"The commissioner has consoled the family and friends of the deceased, who was taken to the hospital and confirmed dead by doctors.

His corpse was deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

"He urges them to maintain calm, assuring that necessary police actions will be taken to ensure that justice prevails," the statement read.
