The suspects were also said to have been part of the six-man robbery gang that invaded and robbed students at the Western Delta University in Oghara area of the state on June 20.

The Delta State Police Command has said that its operatives arrested some criminal suspects who specialise in robbing warehouses, churches and  event centers in the state.

The suspects were also said to have been part of the six-man robbery gang that invaded and robbed students at the Western Delta University in Oghara area of the state on June 20.

The Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Bright Edafe, who made this known on Friday when the arrested suspects were paraded, said they robbed a warehouse and stole 112 bags of rice, adding that the police operatives also recovered big air-conditioners, speakers, mixers and other equipments from the suspects.

The police spokesperson said, “What they do is that when they get to either warehouses, church premises or places for reception, they tie up the security personnel around there, they are always armed with guns, they go with three vehicles - two Sienna vehicles and a minibus.

“They open the boots and pack up everything they have there. We have a lot of air conditioners, freezers. These people entered a particular warehouse in Aziza Oreh 2 in Warri-Sapele road, where they made away with about 112 bags of rice.

“They did not just do that, they are also part of a six-man gang who robbed some students in the Western Delta University in Oghara on June 20.

“They raided students in that university and made away with their phones.”

According to him, upon receipt of that complaint, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Olufemi Abaniwonda, directed that the matter be transferred to the DPO Ekpa, who carried out a discreet intelligence investigation that led to the arrest of the suspects.

“They took us to their hideout where the exhibits were recovered including bags of rice, air conditioners, freezers, speakers, generators, even gates, because when they pull this thing (gate) down, they carry everything.

“We were made to understand that they were a gang of six. We are still working on them in a bid to recover more weapons from them and arrest other members of the gang,” he said.

He added, “Residents in Uhie local government area, Warri and environs know, because when the DPO reported newly, some of these communities who are armed brought their arms in secret and dropped them and ran away with a message that they don’t want a problem.

“They have been cooperating but it is always difficult not to have moles. We are here to get these moles from society and send them to where they are supposed to be.

“I want to implore residents in Ekpa and Warri to partner with the police. They should arm themselves with the police control room phone numbers. They should also get closer to their DPO so that in cases like this, it can be presented. They can call the police and the patrol team will get there on time.”
