Amid Drop In Power Supply Generation, Nigerian Electricity Companies Increase Tariff For Band A Customers

Electricity data published by the National Bureau of Statistics shows that Nigeria electricity generation dropped by 700GigaWatts in the first quarter of 2024.

 

Despite the recent drop in electricity generation in Nigeria, distribution companies have increased electricity tariff for customers on Band A.

 

Electricity data published by the National Bureau of Statistics shows that Nigeria electricity generation dropped by 700GigaWatts in the first quarter of 2024.

 

In the first quarter of 2024, the electricity generation stood at 5770 watts, a fall from the 6432 Gwh recorded in the last quarter of 2023.

In the third quarter of 2023, the generation stood at 5731Gwh while it was 5909Gwh in the second quarter.

 

In the first quarter of 2023, the generation stood at 5852Gwh.

The country generates 79.46% of its electricity from gas while hydro takes 20.37%, solar takes 0.12%, according to information published by data platform Statista.

Ibadan electricity distribution company through its Acting Managing Director, IBEDC, Francis Agoha, on Wednesday stated that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission had approved an upward tariff increase from N206.80/kWh to N209.50/kWh for users in the category.

 

 

According to a public notice signed by Agoha on Wednesday, the tariffs for Bands B, C, D, and E remain unchanged.

 

The statement read, “Effective immediately, the tariff will be adjusted from N206.80/kWh to N209.50/kWh. This review has been duly approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) as captured in the multi-year tariff supplementary order.”

 

In a related development, Ikeja Electric also announced an increase in tariff rate from N206.80/kWh to N209.50/kWh for Band A customers.

SaharaReporters previously highlighted the issue of estimated billing affecting customers, particularly those in Band A.

As of Q1 2024, the number of unmetered customers stood at 6.4 million, while 5.9 million had been metered.

This compares to 2023 figures of 5.6 million metered and 5.83 million unmetered customers.
