This brutal attack comes just four days after a similar incident in the Ikpele community, where three people, including an elderly couple, lost their lives.

Benue State's Agatu Local Government Area has been plunged into tragedy once again, as a devastating attack by gunmen on the Olegumachi community has resulted in the loss of at least 10 lives.

The assailants unleashed chaos on Tuesday evening, setting homes ablaze and striking fear into the hearts of residents.

This brutal attack comes just four days after a similar incident in the Ikpele community, where three people, including an elderly couple, lost their lives.

A local resident, who preferred anonymity, confirmed that the gunmen attacked Olegumachi on Tuesday evening, killing numerous individuals and setting many houses ablaze.

Although the police have yet to confirm the tragic incident, the chairman of the local government, Phillip Ebenyakwu, told journalists that apart from the killing, the assailants also burnt seven houses.

“Yes, it’s confirmed. There was an attack. What they gave me is 10 (those killed)"

“They (gunmen) were armed with sophisticated weapons, they were looting, robbing and burning houses and killed people.

“About seven houses were burnt down, they went away with many properties and animals such as goats and fowls," the council chairman said.

He, however, noted that he had informed the police and the Department of State Services of the incident.

Meanwhile, when SaharaReporters contacted the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer SP, Catherine Anene, she said she was yet to get the report from the Divisional Police Officer in Agatu.

She said due to network problems, she had been unable to reach the DPO.

“Network in Agatu is always problematic. I have sent text message to the DPO to ascertain the situation in the area but haven't received feedback," she said.
