Kenyan President William Ruto unexpectedly dissolved his entire cabinet on Thursday, retaining only Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

This move comes after widespread protests against tax hikes, which turned violent when security forces clashed with demonstrators, resulting in multiple fatalities. The protests, largely led by youths, had been a show of public discontent with the government's policies.

CNN quoted President Ruto as saying that the decision was taken “upon reflection, and a holistic appraisal” of his cabinet.

The President added, “Even with the progress we’ve made, I’m acutely aware that the people of Kenya have very high expectations of me, and they believe that this administration can undertake the most extensive transformation in our nation’s history.”

A few weeks ago, Kenyan youths stormed the streets of the country in anti-government protest against Ruto’s government increase of tax.

The President who was in the opposition before his election, ordered the deployment of police and the military who fired live ammunition on the protesters, killing several of them while many others were arrested.
