Pregnant Nigerian Woman Raises Alarm As Police Arrest, Detain Husband In Midnight Raid Of Lagos Hospital
July 14, 2024

She said they tried to ask the police officers what her husband’s offence was but they started shooting in the air and threatened to shoot her husband in the leg, saying “This is not EndSARS, police are angry. If you do anyhow, I will scatter your leg. Government is not doing us well.”

A pregnant resident of Lagos State, Mrs Deborah Ojeniyi, has raised an alarm over how officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to Amuwo Odofin Police Post, raided a hospital on Saturday night and arrested her husband.

According to her, her husband committed no crime.

According to Mrs. Ojeniyi, she and her husband visited the Restore Health Clinic in Amuwo Odofin on Saturday evening to see her husband's ailing twin brother, who was receiving treatment. However, around 9 pm, a group of approximately five police officers arrived at the hospital in a shuttle bus and began arresting people, including her husband, who were still outside the hospital premises.

She said they tried to ask the police officers what her husband’s offence was but they started shooting in the air and threatened to shoot her husband in the leg, saying “This is not EndSARS, police are angry. If you do anyhow, I will scatter your leg. Government is not doing us well.”

She said she had to go to the hospital to bring her husband’s ailing twin brother to the police station for confirmation but they were chased away by the officers who started shooting in the air again.

Mrs. Ojeniyi, who is currently at the police station, shared with SaharaReporters that despite her repeated pleas for her husband's release, she has been met with silence and inaction from the police officers.

She said, “Last night my husband and I went to the hospital to see his twin brother. Police came to raid the area, we heard noise outside and my husband stepped outside to see what was happening, next thing, they took him.

“He’s presently at Amuwo Odofin police post, Second Rainbow. The police officers kept shooting at us and chasing us. I explained to them that I am a pregnant woman and they should have pity on me.

“We were chased away, they refused to release my husband. A police officer shot in the air and said ‘this is not EndSARS. Police dey vex; if you do anyhow, I go scatter your leg. Government no dey do us well’ (Police officers are angry. If you misbehave, I will shoot you in the leg. The government is mistreating us).

“The police officers were shooting at us. We only came to see my husband’s twin at the hospital and police were raiding. They took him and others.

“We even took my husband’s twin from the hospital to the station just so they know we are not telling lies but they refused to listen.

“We are back there this morning and it’s still the same. No one is talking to me. I have made many calls. The officers said they are not under FESTAC jurisdiction, that they are under Ikeja jurisdiction but the station is at Second Rainbow.

“They asked what he was doing there, that we were not supposed to patronise that hospital. They said they got a report that some guys in the area smoke marijuana.

“Meanwhile, the hospital wasn’t sealed and the staff of the hospital were not arrested - only people outside the hospital were arrested.”

When asked if her husband was physically assaulted by the police officers, she said, “I have not seen him to be sure he was beaten but I saw them beat a woman up last night. They picked her up from the area too. She’s a hairstylist.

“I’m a pregnant woman, these people are not listening to me.

SaharaReporters attempted to contact the Lagos Police Command for comments on the issue, but efforts to reach the Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful. Despite multiple calls to his mobile number, he did not respond.

A WhatsApp message was also sent, but the only response received was a brief message stating, 'Sorry I am unavailable right now.'
