The students and some concerned staff in recent times had spoken against corruption and mismanagement of funds within the school system under the watch of Dr Wahab.

Facts have emerged about how operatives of the Nigeria Police Force brutalised a lecturer at the Federal College of Education in Akoka, Lagos State, Adeyanju Adeonipekun, on Monday during the invasion of the college.

Adeyanju was among the victims of a stampede that occurred on Monday afternoon when some armed police officers invaded the college premises and began shooting.

The lawless police officers were deployed to stop the inauguration of the institution's governing council by the school provost, Dr Wahab Azeez Ademola.

The students and some concerned staff in recent times had spoken against corruption and mismanagement of funds within the school system under the watch of Dr Wahab.

This was why they called for the instant inauguration of the governing council which would put a check to the excessive power of the provost.

However, the provost who did not want the council inaugurated, started to threaten all the staff and the students’ leaders, according to information received.

He also mobilised armed policemen to disrupt the process, it was learnt.

Adeyanju was among the 30 people arrested by police during the invasion and he is currently being detained in Ojuelegbe Area C Police Division in Lagos State.

A source privy to the situation said: “The police were escorting the school provost and suddenly the police fired a gunshot and this triggered unrest. It was the provost who gave him the order to shoot because he had paid the police. And that was what made the students stand up and question the action of the policeman. So they started shooting bullets and tear gas. The police disrupted the peace.

“Adeyanju being one of the lecturers there came out to calm the students. The student knew him (Adeyanju) because he was once a student union president or secretary before he became a lecturer. He came to address and calm the student and this was when the provost told the police to arrest him. The provost claimed he was the leader of the students tackling his administration. He was badly  beaten and taken to Ojuelegbe Area C.”

The state police command have yet to react to the latest development.
