Confirming the arrest, the wife of the aide, Amina Kachalla, identified the two people arrested alongside her husband as Tasiu Hassan Malgwi and Ibrahim Adamu.

The Borno State Police Command has arrested Shehu Usman Aliyu, the legislative aide of Senator Ali Ndume for allegedly supporting a rally against the removal of his boss as the Chief Whip of the Senate.

Two others were also arrested alongside the aide on Sunday.

According to Daily Trust, the arrest took place in Biu town. Aliyu and others were subsequently transferred to Maiduguri, the state capital were they are currently being detained, with the police claiming to have secured a court order for his detention.

Confirming the arrest, the wife of the aide, Amina Kachalla, identified the two people arrested alongside her husband as Tasiu Hassan Malgwi and Ibrahim Adamu.

“I’m appealing to the police to release my husband. He is our breadwinner and we have been suffering since the day he was arrested,” she said.

Meanwhile, the spokesman for the state police command, Kenneth Daso, has confirmed the arrest.

According to him, the trio were arrested based on an intelligence report.

“It was based on intelligence that they were arrested and the investigation is ongoing,” he said.

Although the PPRO didn't provide details, the arrests have been linked to a cancelled solidarity rally organised in response to Ndume's removal as Senate Chief Whip.

The rally, planned for last Saturday in Biu town, was called off due to security concerns.

A statement from Ndume's Senior Legislative Aide (Media), Junaid Jubrin Maiva, announced the cancellation, citing the fragile security situation in the state.

Maiva's statement partly read: “The general public is hereby informed that the solidarity rally scheduled to take place on 28th July 2024, in Biu, in support of Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, has been cancelled.”

Maiva said the cancellation came in light of potential conflicts with a proposed nationwide protest and concerns over possible disruptions.
