A photo journalist with Daily Independent, Jide Oyekunle was arrested by the police while covering the #EndBadGovernance protest at the Eagle Square in Abuja on Thursday.

 

Police personnel fired teargas at several demonstrators in the Nigeria’s capital, Abuja on Thursday during the protests over the country’s worsening economy situation.

 

The arrest of Jide Oyekunle, who is the Correspondence chairman of Nigerian Union of Journalists, FCT Chapel, was ordered by the police commissioner, Ben Igweh, when he arrived at the venue of the protest.

 

However, the command’s spokesperson Josephine Adeh, told SaharaReporters that Jide was with her and not arrested as claimed.

 

Meanwhile, Jide told SaharaReporters that "the FCT commissioner ordered his arrest, but later released him”.

 

He said Igweh questioned me for covering the protest at Eagle Square when a court had restricted protesters to MKO Abiola Stadium.

 

“My phone is still with them," he said.
