The High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Kingdom has warned its nationals to stay away from large gatherings over recent protests that witnessed a series of violence in the European country.
The advice was given in a special circular issued by the commission on Monday, assuring that its personnel were ready to ensure protection of Nigerians living in the UK.
The circular reads: “The High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Kingdom wishes to inform the Nigerian Community in the United Kingdom that the High Commission is closely monitoring the ongoing protests and riots taking place in various towns across the United Kingdom, following the stabbing incident that occurred in Southport on 29th July 2024.
"The riots, which have assumed a violent and disorderly outlook as evidenced by reported attacks on Law enforcement agents and damages to properties and infrastructure, may spread across the country.
"To this end, the Nigerian Community is advised to be extra vigilant, stay away from protests areas and avoid large gatherings.
“The High Commission will strive to keep the Nigerian Community in the UK informed of any development as the situation unfolds.”
The Nigerian government had earlier issued a travel warning to citizens planning to visit the United Kingdom due to the escalating crisis following the tragic killing of three young girls at a concert.
In a travel alert released on Monday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ref. No: MFA/PR/2024/14), signed by Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, Spokesperson for the Ministry, the government cautioned Nigerians that the situation in the UK has taken a dangerous turn, with reports of attacks on law enforcement officers and infrastructure damage.
The alert advises Nigerians to exercise extreme caution when travelling to the UK.
It warned Nigerians in the UK to be vigilant and self-aware at all times. The Nigerian government also advised them to avoid political processions and protests, rallies or marches, crowded areas and large gatherings.
