The committee is also mandated to look into the issues around the suspension of eight others from the institution.

After expelling 27 students for their alleged role in a protest on campus, the Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun, has constituted an ad hoc committee to look into the circumstances that led to their expulsion.

The committee is also mandated to look into the issues around the suspension of eight others from the institution.

This position was communicated by Prof. Taiwo Olaiya, Chairman of the Governing Council of the institution, during the inaugural meeting of council in Ede, NAN reports.

The school management on July 27 announced the expulsion of 27 students and suspension of eight others over their roles in the May 9 protest in the polytechnic.

The students were accused of participating in a protest against the arrest of their colleagues by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Owode, a community near the institution.

Mr Olaiya, who condemned the protest, said the affected students would be given “another chance” to defend themselves before the committee.

According to him, the committee was given 48 hours to conclude its assignment and report to the council for appropriate action.

“The violent protest is condemnable and never should be encouraged anywhere.

“The right to protest is human right but to vandalise property during a protest is not guarantee anywhere and cannot be justified.

“The affected students alleged that due process was not followed, while some said they were not part of the protest and that is why we are giving them another chance before the committee,” he said.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the Southwest chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students had demanded that the studentship status of the affected students be returned while calling for the removal of the Rector.

The body had also threatened to stage a protest to force the school management to reverse the expulsion and suspension of the students who partook in the protest.
