According to him, after undergoing a minor surgery to remove all foreign bodies in his leg, he decided to return home prematurely for the sake of his safety, and out of consideration for other patients at the hospital who do not deserve the inconvenience and intimidation.
Ugandan opposition leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, who was reportedly shot in the leg by police on Tuesday, has said that operatives of Ugandan security forces stormed the Nsambya Hospital where he was admitted for treatment, harassed doctors on duty and demanded details of his medical records.
Wine, who disclosed this in a post on his X account on Wednesday evening, said the security operatives also made several attempts to forcefully access his treatment room but were held off by his supporters.
The security operatives reportedly blocked all roads leading to the hospital, thereby disrupting hospital traffic flow and endangering more lives.
According to him, after undergoing a minor surgery to remove all foreign bodies in his leg, he decided to return home prematurely for the sake of his safety, and out of consideration for other patients at the hospital who do not deserve the inconvenience and intimidation.
He wrote, “As you may already be aware by now, following yesterday's brutal attack by the Police, I was admitted to Nsambya Hospital for treatment.
“Once the regime learned of my admission, security operatives came to the hospital and harassed the doctors treating me, demanding for details of my medical records.
“They also made several attempts to forcefully access my treatment room but were held off by our vigilant comrades.
“As if that wasn't enough, they also blocked all roads leading to the hospital, thereby disrupting hospital traffic flow and endangering more lives.
“Consequently, after undergoing minor surgery to remove all foreign bodies that had remained in my leg, I decided to return home prematurely today for the sake of my safety, and out of consideration for other patients at Nsambya Hospital who do not deserve the inconvenience and intimidation.
“I will get the rest of my treatment from home. Many thanks to all of you who continue to send kind messages of support and consolation. We will soon speak out.”
SaharaReporters earlier reported that Wine’s legal team revealed that he was set to undergo surgery after suffering a leg wound during a chaotic incident in which his party reported he was shot by the police.
Wine, who is a popular critic of President Yoweri Museveni, visited the town of Bulindo, around 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of the capital Kampala, when he was shot, according to his party, National Unity Platform (NUP).
In confusing scenes in the immediate aftermath of Tuesday's incident, the opposition leader was rushed to Nsambya Hospital with images and video shared on social media showing the 42-year-old grimacing in pain.
SaharaReporters learned that the politician was en route to visit one of his lawyers when the incident occurred.
The shooting took place as Wine returned from checking on Musisi George, a lawyer associated with his party.
However, the Ugandan Police authorities denied shooting him in the leg, according to Wine.
Wine said in a post on his X account on Wednesday morning that the police statement claimed that he stumbled as he was getting into his vehicle and got injured.
