The minister called on principals, as critical stakeholders, to collaborate in improving the education sector.
The Nigerian government is set to restructure the 115 Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs) into basic and secondary schools.
Yusuf Sununu, Minister of State for Education, made this known during the opening of the annual general meeting of principals of unity colleges in Abuja on Tuesday.
Sununu stated that the unbundling of the unity colleges aligns with the National Policy on Education (NPE).
He explained that the restructuring would attract more funding to enhance infrastructure, address teacher welfare, and create job opportunities.
He added, “The ministry, with support from relevant agencies of government, will ensure it is achieved in the shortest possible time.”
The minister called on principals, as critical stakeholders, to collaborate in improving the education sector.
He urged them to curb social vices, maintain a culture of discipline, and work with local communities to secure the schools.
The unity schools’ initiative began in the mid-1960s, aiming to promote inter-regional education and reduce tribal divisions. The first three unity schools were established in Okposi, Sokoto, and Warri in 1966.
