In a statement signed by Debo Ologunagba, PDP National Publicity Secretary on Saturday, the party raised concerns after reports surfaced in sections of the media, alleging that AIG Igwe might provide cover for APC thugs.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun to immediately withdraw an Assistant Inspector-General, Benneth Igweh, from election duties in Edo State, citing potential crises during the electoral process.
The call follows allegations that AIG Igweh had been strategically placed to facilitate electoral malpractices.
In a statement signed by Debo Ologunagba, PDP National Publicity Secretary on Saturday, the party raised concerns after reports surfaced in sections of the media, alleging that AIG Igwe might provide cover for APC thugs.
"The AIG has been reportedly positioned by the APC to provide cover for APC thugs to attack collation centers and compromise election results in favour of the APC," the party stated.
Further reports suggest that AIG Igweh allegedly met with some police personnel to execute this plan.
This comes after military operatives dislodged and arrested armed thugs, believed to be working for the APC, who invaded the INEC office in Oredo Local Government Area to tamper with electoral materials.
"Our Party therefore calls on the IGP to immediately recall the AIG to Abuja as his continued presence in Edo State is already causing apprehension in the State," the PDP urged, stressing the importance of transparency in the elections.
The party further called on AIG Igweh to address these serious allegations, stating, "The AIG must speak out and clear the air on this very weighty allegation against him in the public domain."
In its statement, the PDP also praised the youths of Edo State for their vigilance. "The PDP commends the youths of Edo State for their vigilance and courage in ensuring that the Will of the people in this election is not subverted," the party noted, applauding their role in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.
The PDP also acknowledged the efforts of the military who successfully thwarted an attack on the Oredo INEC office.
