Babayomi described the protests as the fundamental right of Nigerian, “especially when seeking and demanding good governance from ‘leaders’ in public offices”.
The African Action Congress (AAC), Oyo State chapter, has expressed its readiness to mobilise its members and other citizens to join the forthcoming protests against bad governance slated to start on October 1, 2024.
This is stated in a press statement issued on Thursday morning by the state chairman of the party, Kayode Babayomi, which described the current economic hardship created by the policies of President Bola Tinubu as ‘unbearable’.
The statement reads: “We in the African Action Congress (AAC), Oyo state chapter, has declared our unwavering support for the Nigerian people in the forthcoming #FearlessInOctober protest, a continuation of the #EndBadGovernance protest in August.”
Babayomi described the protests as the fundamental right of Nigerian, “especially when seeking and demanding good governance from ‘leaders’ in public offices”.
He said, “We want to state categorically that Nigerians have seen the direction of destruction, that the present Tinubu APC-led regime is on the path of perdition, leading the country to ruins. The material condition of the people is at an all-time decline, the hardship is now unbearable for the mass of our people at this time.
“Nigerians should occupy the streets and demand good governance at all levels, so we can put an end to all the corruption and hunger that’s ravaging the land.
“We admonish our party members and all good-minded Nigerians to join the protests across the 33 local government areas in Oyo state.
“We also encourage all organizations, unions, forums, and civil societies to stand up and be part of history against the current neo-liberalism in Nigeria, the consequences of these policies recognize no group or demography, we are all facing it, it’s time we rise up and demand for what is right.
“African Action Congress, Oyo State will be supporting and mobilizing for the protest because it's long overdue. Let us occupy the streets and shut down the streets to demand good governance, the struggle continues until we win.”
Human rights activist and convener of the #RevolutionNow Movement, Omoyele Sowore, had also announced that the planned nationwide protests in October 2024 will not stop until the Nigerian government meets the demands of citizens.
