Tinubu Govt Pushes Bill To Allow Nigerian Ports Authority, Maritime Agency NIMASA Collect Fees, Others In Naira; Ditch Dollars

This was disclosed on Wednesday at the State House in Abuja by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, during a briefing.

The Bola Tinubu Presidency says the government has proposed in the Economic Stabilisation Bill before the National Assembly, that the operating laws of the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) be amended to allow the agencies to start collecting fees, charges, levies, fines and other monies accruing to them in naira instead of dollars.

This was disclosed on Wednesday at the State House in Abuja by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, during a briefing.

Onanuga said, “The Economic Stabilisation Bill is not just a bill, it comprises many things that were brought together as one bill,” explaining that the first part of the bill centres on the plan to amend the National Identity Management Commission Bill 2024.

He said, “The second has to do with the operation laws guiding NIMASA (Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency) and the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA).

“The amendment is also under that Economic Stabilisation Bill, that all their fees, charges, levies, fines and other monies accruing to them and payable to those agencies will now be paid in Naira at the applicable exchange rate.

“They were only charging in dollars but now they can collect it in naira, which I found out that this government wants to put a lot of emphasis on our national currency instead of dollarising our economy.”
