Enugu Road Collapse Leaves Community Residents, Farm Produce Stranded

SaharaReporters reports that erosion has eaten deep into the only access road connecting Nsukka local government area and Isi-Uzo LGA. Erosion had already created a big ditch on nearly two-thirds of the road, preventing vehicles from plying the route.

Agu Umabor residents in Eha-Alumona, Nsukka Local Government Area, are pleading for urgent government intervention as erosion threatens to cut off their sole access road.

The critical Agu Umabor-Eha-Alumona-Breme-Mbu-Ikem Road, connecting Nsukka and Isi-Uzo LGAs, has been severely damaged.

SaharaReporters reports that erosion has eaten deep into the only access road connecting Nsukka local government area and Isi-Uzo LGA. Erosion had already created a big ditch on nearly two-thirds of the road, preventing vehicles from plying the route.

Now, a journey that would ordinarily take 15 to 20 minutes from Ikem, the headquarters of Isi-Uzo LGA to Nsukka LGA now take approximately 2 hours or even more as residents now go through Obolo-Afor in Udenu LGA before connecting to Nsukka or they go through Enugu East LGA to connect Nsukka.

The people of the worst hit community, Agu Umabor, which is close to Isi-Uzu with a population of about 100,000 people, are now trapped as the road is the only access road to the community. The community residents who are predominantly farmers rely on road to take their farm produce to the market.

In a Save Our Soul petition sent to SaharaReporters, the community through Agu Umabor Elites Group appealed to Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State to come to their rescue.

According to the group, timely intervention is integral to preventing further deterioration, alleviating suffering, and ensuring the community's economic survival.

The SOS titled: ‘Agu Umabor Elites Group cry out again on the worsening condition of Agu Umabor Road," was jointly signed by Abonyi Gilbert Emeka and Ogbu Christopher, its President and Secretary General respectively.

It said, "We the members of Agu Umabor Elites Group Eha-Alumona in Nsukka Local Government Area wish to draw the attention of Enugu State government and the general public to the deplorable condition of Agu Umabor-Eha-Alumona-Breme-Mbu-Ikem Road in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State."

The group noted that earlier in the year, it appealed to the state governor to come to their rescue as the road was about to be cut off completely by gully erosion at the time.

The community said, “Agu Umabor people are law-abiding citizens and has a population of about 100,000 people. They are predominantly farmers and this is the only road through which they bring out their farm and other agricultural produce.”

"We are again appealing to Enugu State Government and all public spirited individuals to come to our rescue as the road needs urgent attention and may not likely survive the remaining part of the rainy season," the group lamented.
