This move aims to tackle transportation challenges and make life easier for residents.

President Bola Tinubu has given the green light to the North East Development Commission's (NEDC) plan to introduce electric-powered vehicles in the region.

This move aims to tackle transportation challenges and make life easier for residents.

General Paul Tarfa (retd.), chairman of the commission, disclosed this after meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

According to General Tarfa, the NEDC is working on building a 5kVA or 10kVA solar-powered grid to address power supply issues. Beyond electric vehicles, which have been modified to carry more passengers and goods, electric tricycles will also be deployed.

This initiative is part of the NEDC's March announcement to introduce electric vehicles and alleviate intra and inter-state transportation challenges.

“We plan to embark on (e-mobility projects) that is electric vehicles to ease the challenges of transportation faced by people in the North East,” Tarfa said.

He said the discussions during the meeting include how to ensure the completion of all the ongoing projects in the region, especially the “six major road projects that are ongoing across Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states,” while expressing hope that they will be completed by December 2024.
