Upon his removal, Bayero returned to Kano and moved into the mini palace at Nasarawa, where he continued to hold court.

At an international lecture in Abuja, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, referred to Alhaji Ado Bayero, as the Emir of Kano, reigniting the ongoing dispute over the emirate.

Bayero and Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi had both laid a claim to the prestigious title.

In March 2020, former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje dethroned Sanusi, appointing Bayero as the new Emir.

However, four years later, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf sacked Bayero and reinstated Sanusi.

Upon his removal, Bayero returned to Kano and moved into the mini palace at Nasarawa, where he continued to hold court.

This action angered Yusuf, who ordered Bayero’s arrest.

Instead of complying, the security around the mini palace was reinforced, sparking rumours that Bayero had the backing of federal authorities.

Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, had accused Ribadu of facilitating Bayero’s return by providing two private jets.

Ribadu denied the allegation and threatened to sue Gwarzo. In a letter from his counsel, Aliyu & Musa Chambers, Ribadu demanded an apology, which Gwarzo later issued.

As the legal battle between the two camps continued, Ribadu’s recognition of Bayero during the 1st Annual International Lecture organised by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) drew attention.

While addressing dignitaries, Ribadu said, "Of course the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero," which was met with applause.

Social media erupted with reactions. Rabiu Uba Danzainab posted the 33-second video on X, captioning it, "Ribadu addressed our Emir as the Legitimate Emir of Kano." Ahmed Idris, however, reacted by saying, "APC Emir. He better start a new jihad."

Another user, @StudentYahaya, commented, "Only the court of a competent jurisdiction can do so, not Ribadu."

Meanwhile, @mdhadjii questioned, "The legitimate emir is not seated on the high table.. is that?"
