Atiku highlighted the importance of the elections, stating that they provide a unique opportunity to reaffirm the Supreme Court's ruling on local government autonomy.

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has described the upcoming local government elections in Rivers State as a crucial moment for Nigeria's constitutional democracy.

According to Atiku in a tweet on his official X handle on Friday, “The local government elections in Rivers State tomorrow stand as a beacon of hope, offering renewed vigour to constitutional democracy at the very core of governance.”

Atiku highlighted the importance of the elections, stating that they provide a unique opportunity to reaffirm the Supreme Court's ruling on local government autonomy.

He noted, “These elections present an opportunity to uphold the Supreme Court's ruling on local government autonomy, breathing life into the foundational principles of our republic.”

The former vice president stressed that the significance of the elections goes beyond just a local affair.

He said, “Undoubtedly, this election resounds as a powerful affirmation of constitutionalism and the rule of law, a cause that should rally the support of all true champions of democracy.”

Atiku also commended the efforts of the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for ensuring the elections proceed as scheduled.

“I commend the Governor of Rivers state, Siminalayi Fubara, for his courageous leadership in ensuring local government elections are held in Rivers State,” he stated.

He urged all residents of Rivers State to approach the elections with a sense of duty and peace, calling on them to exercise their right to vote responsibly.

“I encourage every resident to embrace their civic duty with peace and purpose as they cast their votes, selecting those who will lead at the grassroots level,” Atiku remarked.

Concluding his statement, Atiku emphasized the sanctity of the democratic process and the power it gives to the people.

“It is my unwavering conviction that the democratic process is sacred, and through it, the people must be empowered to shape their future by choosing their leaders in every local community,” he concluded.

The Rivers local government elections are expected to be a defining moment, especially in light of the Supreme Court's emphasis on local government autonomy, a principle many view as central to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
