Amid the political tension and crisis in Rivers State, a section of the Eleme Local Government Council secretariat has been set ablaze.

This development was confirmed to Channels TV following a phone conversation with former Ambassador Oji Ngofa, who hails from Eleme.

It was reported that the newly elected chairman Brain Gokpa arrived at the council secretariat on Monday alongside his councillors and supporters, only to discover that some buildings in the secretariat had already been set ablaze.

SaharaReporters reached out to the Police Public Relations Officer in Rivers state, Grace Iringe-Koko to confirm the development but she did not answer her calls. She also did not reply to the text message sent to her.

The state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on Sunday, swore in the newly elected local government chairpersons in the state.

The swearing-in was done after the chairmen received their certificates of return from Adolphus Enebeli, Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission.

There had been tension in the state following the controversies that came with the conduct of the elections.

Despite the challenges, the Action Peoples Party (APP) emerged victorious, securing 22 out of 23 chairmanship positions.

Sources on Sunday told SaharaReporters that Nyesom Wike’s political faction in the state had reportedly mobilised 20 youths from each ward, offering them N15,000 each, to block council secretariats and prevent Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s group from accessing them.

“There is the possibility of a crisis in Rivers State on Monday. Fubara is swearing in the chairmen of local government councils elected at the weekend to resume work on Monday.

“Meanwhile, the Wike group is mobilising 20 youths paid N15,000 each from each ward to block the various council secretariats to prevent the Fubara group from entering,” one of the sources said.
