The Airbus 350 departed from Seattle on Tuesday, bound for Istanbul, when the incident occurred. Airline spokesperson Yahya Ustun wrote on X that the pilot, identified as Ilcehin Pehlivan, collapsed during flight TK204, Mail Online reports.

"After an unsuccessful attempt to give first aid, the flight crew of another pilot and a co-pilot decided to make an emergency landing, but he died before landing," Ustun said.

The 59-year-old pilot had worked with Turkish Airlines since 2007 and had passed a medical examination in March. "There had been no indication of any health problems," Ustun added.

"As the Turkish Airlines family, we wish God's mercy upon our captain and patience to his grieving family, all his colleagues, and loved ones," Ustun said in his statement.

Flight trackers indicated the jet's diversion north over Canada before it was redirected to JFK International Airport. The plane landed safely, with passengers continuing their journey to Turkey via JFK.
