The explanation contained in a statement LFF shared on its X handle, added that the situation was a routine air traffic and logistical challenges rather than deliberate foul play.

The Libyan Football Federation has said that it did not make public accusations nor question the integrity of the Nigerian authorities despite the difficulties their team encountered last week.

It stated this on Monday while explaining the circumstances surrounding the Nigerian Super Eagles’ hours-delay at Al Abraq International Airport, noting that the diversion of the team’s flight was not intended as a hostile act.

It said, “We are deeply concerned about the recent reports surrounding the diversion of the Nigerian national team’s flight ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Libya.

“While we regret any inconvenience caused, it is essential to note that such incidents can occur due to routine air traffic control protocols, security checks, or logistical challenges that affect international air travel.”

It said, “We have the utmost respect for our Nigerian counterparts and want to reassure them that the diversion of their flight was not intentional.

“There are no grounds to accuse the Libyan security teams or the Libyan Football Federation of deliberately orchestrating this incident. Such actions are inconsistent with our values and principles.

“We firmly reject any claims that suggest foul play or sabotage in this situation.

“It is important to highlight that just last week, our own national team faced significant challenges upon our arrival in Nigeria for the third match of the Africa Cup of Nations qualification.

“Despite the difficulties we encountered, we did not make public accusations nor question the integrity of the Nigerian authorities. Football, in its essence, unites nations, and we are committed to upholding the spirit of fairness and mutual respect both on and off the field.”

The explanation contained in a statement LFF shared on its X handle, added that the situation was a routine air traffic and logistical challenges rather than deliberate foul play.

It said the diversion of the Nigerian delegation’s chartered ValueJet aircraft to Al Abraq International Airport, rather than Benghazi as planned, stemmed from air traffic control protocols and security checks common in international trave

“These are standard procedures at airports worldwide, and delays or rerouting, though unfortunate, are not uncommon,” the federation added.

The statement stressed that the LFF respects Nigeria and had no intention of creating difficulties for the Super Eagles, who had been stranded at the airport for over 15 hours. The Libyan FA expressed concern over the situation but noted that such logistical issues are not uncommon.

“We have always prioritised treating all visiting teams, including our African brothers and other international delegations, with the respect and dignity they deserve.”

It added, “Hosting these events is a great honour for us, and we strive to ensure that all teams feel safe and respected as our guests.

“Our doors are open to our Nigerian brothers and all African teams, and we continue to promote the spirit of unity, sportsmanship, and friendship in the world of football."

SaharaReporters reported earlier that the Libyan authorities had provided a bus to convey Nigeria’s Super Eagles players and coaches to their destination after leaving them stranded for about 16 hours inside Al Abraq International Airport.

SaharaReporters had reported how the team had been stranded for hours in Libya after the host country’s government disrupted their travel plans.

This forced the players to announce that they would boycott the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Libya, scheduled to be played on Tuesday.
