University Of Calabar Suspends Second Lecturer Over Misconduct In One Week
October 14, 2024

The suspension follows allegations that Idung failed to return funds collected from students for their induction into the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT).

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has suspended a lecturer, Dr Joseph Idung, from the Department of Science Laboratory Technology.

The suspension follows allegations that Idung failed to return funds collected from students for their induction into the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT).

The Registrar, Gabriel Egbe, confirmed the suspension in a letter addressed to Idung on Monday.

It was gathered that Idung failed to return funds collected from students intended for their induction into NISLT.

Meanwhile, the latest suspension follows the recent dismissal of Dr. Joseph Akpan, the Acting Head of the Department of Pharmacology, who was found to have altered examination scores in PHM 311 (Introduction to General Antimicrobial Pharmacology), as detailed by the Senate Examination Misconduct Committee (SEMC).

Akpan’s suspension took effect from October 8, 2024.

According to Egbe, the administration expressed disappointment over Idung’s refusal to refund the allegedly extorted money.

He said, "The Vice-Chancellor Professor Florence Obi has ordered his suspension from university duties to allow him to face the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit (ACTU), which is tasked with investigating the issue.”

"Dr. Idung has also been instructed to return all university property in his possession to the Head of the Department and to avoid campus unless responding to ACTU’s summons," he said.

However, the letter advises the Bursar to place Idung on half salary during the suspension period.
