Yoruba Nation Agitator Arrested For Invading Oyo Government House Dies In Prison

Officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service informed the court of Lateef’s death when other suspects were brought for arraignment on Wednesday.

 

A Yoruba Nation agitator identified as Adejumo Lateef has died in prison custody. 

 

Officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service informed the court of Lateef’s death when other suspects were brought for arraignment on Wednesday.

 

The deceased was the 18th defendant among 27 facing charges of conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, and treason, in connection to the invasion of the Oyo State Government Secretariat on Saturday, April 13, in an attempt to declare the Yoruba Nation.

 

Dressed in army camouflage and armed with rifles, charms and Oodua Nation flags, they attempted to also take over the Oyo State House of Assembly.

 

They caused some commotion as they insisted on hoisting a flag until they were soon overpowered and arrested by police officers.

 

The defendants (1- 27) facing trial include Adeyemo Peter, Adeyemo Joseph, Amos Oluwaseyi Ogundeji, Ayanwale Rofiat, Olalere Mathew and Ismaila Malomo Peter.

 

Others include Fatoki Anthony, Murittala Abefe, Ismaila Adepoju, Fatunmbi Wasiu, Isaac Friday, Ayanwale Saburi, Adeola Elegbede, Ademola Adeniyi, Ogundeji Alabi, Ojo Olufemi, Ajani Ezekiel, Adejumo Lateef and Ayoola David.

 

The list also includes Adesokan Hameed, Adesokan Hameed, Abiona Esther, Omoyajowo Funsho, Tola Olufemi, Oritola Alabi, Kayode Fakeye and Taiwo Titilayo.

 

They were all arraigned on five counts bordering on conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, unlawful assembly, treasonable felony and treason.

 

The case is being presided over by Justice K. B. Olawoyin at the Oyo State High Court, Ibadan.

 

In his ruling, Justice Olawoyin adjourned the case to November 6, 8 and 13 for arraignment and hearing.
