Volcano Discovery also reported a 5.7 magnitude earthquake at the sea, saying, “A strong magnitude 5.7 earthquake occurred in the Maluku Sea near the coast of North Maluku, Indonesia, in the early afternoon of Monday, Oct 21, 2024 at 3.32 pm local time (Asia/Jayapura GMT +9).

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Halmahera Sea in Indonesia on Monday, marking the fourth quake to hit the country in one day, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

“The quake had a very shallow depth of 10 km (6 mi) and was reported felt by some people near the epicenter.

“No significant damage or impact is expected from this quake and no particular alert was issued.”

Indonesia’s meteorology office, BMKG, confirmed that the day’s first earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.6, occurred at 10:24 a.m. local time, Mail Online reports.

Indonesia experiences frequent earthquakes due to its position at the intersection of the Pacific, Eurasian, and Indo-Australian tectonic plates.

This location subjects the country to an average of three earthquakes per day.

Most earthquakes in Indonesia occur at sea, causing little damage. However, when they hit populated areas, the consequences can be severe.

Last month, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in West Java left two children dead and nearly 160 people injured.

“One passed away due to injuries from falling debris, and the other had a seizure,” local reports said. More than 784 homes collapsed, and over 5,500 buildings were damaged, displacing hundreds of residents.

The total damage from the West Java quake amounted to more than £19 million, with many families still recovering.
