The House of Representatives has directed its Committee on Power to investigate the frequent national grid collapse and provide a report within three weeks.
The Nigerian electricity sector has recorded several cases of national grid collapse in recent times.
A recent report showed that the national grid collapsed about 105 times under the administrations of President Bola Tinubu and his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.
Prominent members of the Organised Private Sector, OPS, earlier this week raised concerns over the frequent national power grid collapse, saying the development is crippling already distressed businesses.
However, a motion of urgent national importance was raised by Hon. Mansur Manu Soro (Bauchi, PDP) during the plenary session on Wednesday.
In his motion, Soro expressed deep concern over the persistent grid failures, which have plunged the entire country into blackouts, worsening the economic challenges already faced by Nigerians.
Soro emphasized the critical role of stable power supply in driving economic growth and development. He highlighted the alarming frequency of national grid collapses - eight times in 2024 alone - which has plunged states in the North West and North East regions into darkness.
Soro urged the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to promptly restore electricity to the affected areas.
The situation is further complicated by the Minister of Power's assurances of improved electricity supply, which led to increased tariffs for Band A customers, despite the persistent grid collapses.
