Following the execution of a German-Iran national Jamshid Sharmahd in Iran, Germany has protested against the killing.
The development has seen Germany recall its ambassador to Iran over the execution of Jamshid Sharmahd.
According to information provided by the Iranian state media on Monday, Sharmahd was put to death after he was convicted of carrying out terrorist attacks.
Before his death, he was accused by Iran of heading a pro-monarchist group accused of a deadly 2008 bombing and planning other attacks in the country.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on X on Tuesday "no terrorist enjoys impunity in Iran. Even if supported by Germany".
"Iranian national Jamshid Sharmahd openly and unashamedly led a terrorist attack on a mosque that killed 14 innocent people," Araqchi said in his post.
The US Office of the Special Envoy for Iran, through the Deputy Special Envoy Abram Paley in a post on X said, “We are looking into reports that the Iranian regime has executed German-Iranian dual citizen Jamshid Sharmahd, which, if true, would represent the latest abhorrent act in the regime’s long history of transnational repression and accelerating rate of executions.
“Sharmahd should never have been imprisoned in the first place. His kidnapping and rendition, as well as sham trial and reports of torture, were reprehensible. We will continue to get to the bottom of these reports and stand with the international community in holding the regime accountable for its horrific abuses.”
His daughter Gazelle Sharmahd, on X, lambasted the US and German governments.
She said, “The German @AuswaertigesAmt and US @StateDept will talk to me shortly and I will assess if they have any proof that the cowardly jihadists of the occupying Islamic Regime have murdered you in fear of your very breath.
“We will see in a few hours if these 2 incompetent and corrupt governments can tell me tonight:
“1- What have they (#US & #German) done for 4 years when their German-American national was kidnapped in Dubai and taken to Iran by force?
“Besides abandoning you in every #hostage negotiation what do they have to show for?
“2- What proof do they have that you dad, journalist and freedom advocate Jamshid Sharmahd, were murdered? Did they see you?
“Have they obtained your dead body?
“Did they stand by and watch as your last breath was taken? Or did they once again take the word of the lying jihadists? We deserve proof!
“3- If the news is confirmed with concrete proof they need to bring you home immediately so we can put you to rest in peace through our Iranian #Zoroastrian customs and not turn you into another #BobLevinson or keep your body any longer hostage in the hands of the Islamist murderers.
“4- As an American-German national was brutally and shamelessly kidnapped, tortured, held hostage for 4 years and (if confirmed) murdered by the biggest terrorist Organisation in the world, apparently for retaliation of #Israeli strikes on the regime, this must have immediate and unmistakable grave consequences for them now.
Where is our president @POTUS? The @VP Harris? The @SecBlinken? The German chancellor @Bundeskanzler? No call?”
Sharmahd, who also holds U.S. residency, was sentenced to death in 2023 on charges of "corruption on earth", a capital offence under Iran's Islamic laws.
