Akpologun said that Ikwechegh’s verbal and physical attack on the Bolt driver represents a profound breach of public trust, an affront to justice, and a stark danger to the rule of law in Nigeria.
The Open Society on Justice Reform Project (OSJRP) has asked the National Assembly and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to punish the power-drunk House of Representatives member, Alex Ikwechegh, for assaulting and brutalising a Bolt driver in Abuja.
The OSJRP, which made the call in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Executive Director, Samuel Akpologun, said the lawmaker must be appropriately punished to deter other public office holders who feel they are above the law and above others in the society from exhibiting similar misconduct.
Akpologun said that Ikwechegh’s verbal and physical attack on the Bolt driver represents a profound breach of public trust, an affront to justice, and a stark danger to the rule of law in Nigeria.
He said the incident is a disturbing testament to the unchecked impunity that some individuals in authority continue to wield.
“The OSJRP views such conduct as not only disgraceful but as an act that undermines core principles of our Constitution, which is anchored on respect for human rights and the dignity of all persons.
“Section 34 of the Nigerian Constitution expressly guarantees the right to dignity of every citizen, prohibiting any form of degrading treatment.
“Any action that contradicts this sacred guarantee, particularly by a public servant, strikes at the very heart of justice and mocks the foundations of our democratic governance,” Akpologun said.
Akpologun stressed that the issue transcends the physical assault itself as it casts a shadow over the integrity of public institutions and erodes confidence in Nigeria’s legislative framework, sending a message of indifference and disregard for the rule of law.
He said, “OSJRP is deeply troubled that, if left unaddressed, such behavior could encourage further abuses by those entrusted with public power, thereby endangering our society’s commitment to justice and fairness.
“We are compelled to demand an immediate investigation and, if necessary, enforcement of disciplinary measures against Mr. Ikwecheghi.”
“OSJRP is therefore urging both the Senate leadership and the Inspector-General of Police to pursue this matter with utmost urgency,” he added.
According to him, by holding Ikwecheghi accountable, the authorities have the opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to the Nigerian Constitution, restore public confidence, and demonstrate that all citizens, regardless of status, are equal under the law.
