The M-346FAs will play a dual role, serving as both training aircraft and combat-ready platforms for various missions, including close air support, ground and maritime strike, and air defense operations.
Nigeria is expecting a boost to its air force capabilities with the upcoming delivery of 24 Leonardo M-346FAs, advanced jet trainers with combat capabilities.
The first three aircraft are set to arrive in early 2025, with six already in production. This follows a visit by Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff, to Leonardo's facilities in Italy in mid-October, Flight Global reports.
The M-346FAs will play a dual role, serving as both training aircraft and combat-ready platforms for various missions, including close air support, ground and maritime strike, and air defense operations.
These new aircraft will significantly enhance Nigeria's aerial capabilities, replacing the aging Dassault Alpha Jet A/E and complementing the existing fleet of A-29 Super Tucano and JF-17 Thunder aircraft ². The partnership with Leonardo also includes training, support, and munitions, ensuring the Nigerian Air Force is well-equipped to operate these advanced jets effectively.
Abubakar emphasised the need for a maintenance hub in Nigeria to support the upcoming M-346 fleet. This strategic move will ensure long-term support and sustainability for the advanced jet trainers.
In addition to securing the M-346s, Abubakar oversaw program review meetings for the acquisition and explored purchasing 10 more AW109 Trekker helicopters. These versatile helicopters will enhance the Air Force's capabilities in various missions.
This includes combat search and rescue, that is quickly locating and retrieving personnel in hostile environments; medical evacuation, which is providing critical care transport for wounded personnel and tactical training, that is enhancing pilot skills with advanced simulation and training capabilities
The Nigerian Air Force already operates a pair of AW109 Trekker helicopters and expects to receive the next batch by early 2026. This expansion will bolster Nigeria's counter-terrorism efforts and strengthen its aerial defenses.
