Two members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards lost their lives in a gyroplane crash in the country’s southeastern region on Monday.
According to the semi-official Fars news agency, the accident occurred near Sirkan, a city in the Sistan-Baluchistan province, close to the borders of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The area has been a hotspot for ongoing clashes involving Iranian security forces, Sunni militants, and drug traffickers, Reuters reports.
"Second Brigadier General Hamid Mazandarani, the commander of the Nineva Brigade of Golestan province, and his pilot, were martyred in this accident," reported the agency.
No details were provided as to why General Mazandarani, who commands a brigade in the northern province of Golestan, was present in the southeastern region at the time.
Last month, the same province saw the deaths of ten Iranian border guards in encounters with suspected Sunni Muslim militants, highlighting the area’s security challenges.
