Adeleke also directed that flags should be flown at half-mast in the state during the three-day mourning period.
Lagbaja, born on February 28, 1968, in Ilobu, Osun State, was appointed by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023, as the 27th Chief of Army Staff.
His death was announced on Tuesday in a press statement issued by the Nigerian government.
SaharaReporters had exclusively reported how the Army General was flown abroad by his family members to attend to his medical needs.
Sources had described his ailment as “strange” to SaharaReporters.
“The Chief of Army Staff is nowhere to be found for many days now. He hasn’t been seen at the Army headquarters or any military function in the last three weeks. I can confirm to you that he is seriously sick and was taken to the hospital. However, his family members arranged for him to be moved out of the country for medical treatment,” one of the sources had said.
The Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr Kolapo Alimi also disclosed that condolence registers had been opened at the Government House and the Governor’s Office for the public to convey condolence messages to the people of Osun.
Describing Lagbaja’s death as devastating, a colossal loss to humanity and the nation, Alimi also said the memory of the late COAS would linger for a long time in the minds of the people.
“The government is saddened by this irreparable loss of one of the Glories of Osun State, and we particularly condole with the Lagbaja family of Ilobu, the Olobu of Ilobu, and everyone.”
“The mourning period will start today, Thursday, November 7, 2024, and end on Saturday, November 9, while the Condolence Register will allow people to pen down their memories of him, for the immortality of the late COAS, who died at the age of 56.”
