The Bureau stated that a total of 1,076 males, including male children were killed in Q2 2024 road traffic crashes, accounting for 82.45%, while a total of 5,837 males were injured during the period, accounting for 76.30%.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said in its report that 1,305 Nigerians were killed in 2,404 road traffic crashes that occurred across the country in the Second Quarter (Q2) of 2024.
The Bureau stated that a total of 1,076 males, including male children were killed in Q2 2024 road traffic crashes, accounting for 82.45%, while a total of 5,837 males were injured during the period, accounting for 76.30%.
Also, a total of 229 females including female children were killed, accounting for 17.55%, while a total of 1,813 females, including female children were injured, accounting for 23.7%.
The report noted that of all the crashes, serious cases stood top in Q2 2024 with 1,525, while fatal and minor cases stood at 661 and 218 respectively.
It stated that a total of 3,612 vehicles were involved in road traffic crashes in Q2 2024.
The report says, “The North-Central zone recorded the highest number of crashes in Q2 2024 with 867, followed by the South-West with 661, while the South-East had the least with 119.
“Similarly, the North-Central reported the highest number of casualties with 3,020, followed by the South-West with 2,019, while the South-South recorded the least with 452.”
The report shows that in the Q2 under review, 40 government vehicles were involved, while others were 1,123 private vehicles; 2,446 commercial vehicles and three diplomat vehicles.
Further breakdown of vehicles involved in the road traffic crashes shows that 234 trailers were involved in road traffic crashes in Q2, while others were 14 luxury buses,; 949 cars; 157 tricycles, popularly known as Keke Napep (tricycles); six vans and 496 trucks.
Others were 67 tankers; 706 minibuses; 101 SUVs; 743 motorcycles; 77 pick-ups; four bicycles and 58 other types of vehicles.
The NBS report stated that the crashes were mostly caused in all the regions by speed violation; mechanically deficient vehicles and other factors including bad roads.
