Some students have expressed concerns over the Lagos State University (LASU) management’s demand that they pay a total of N260,000 for the registration of their outstanding courses.
Speaking with SaharaReporters on Friday morning, one of the students who should have graduated in 2010 claimed that the school administration refused to let her register for her spill-over courses.
She stated that the situation had prevented her from obtaining her certificate for 14 years.
The student added after several pleas, the school management eventually provided a platform for the affected students to register for their outstanding courses but surprisingly, the school pegged the fees at N260,000.
The affected students are up to hundreds, SaharaReporters learnt during an interview with one of them.
“We are to pay N250,000 for a make-up examination and N10,000 for the online charge according to the post on the school portal. This is too much considering the fact that we paid N47,000 as our school fees during our time,” one of the students told SaharaReporters.
The student added: “It is not our fault that the school did not resolve our issues up to this time. It is their fault. They caused the delay so it is unfair for them to ask us to pay such a huge amount of money because of one course.
“I could not do anything meaningful because of this delay. I have missed a lot of opportunities since I could not tender my certificate.”
When contacted, the university spokesperson, Mrs Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, expressed amazement that some of their students were facing such a delay.
She did, however, confirm that it is within the school's policy for spill-over students to pay for registration, adding that she would look into whether the institution is seeking N260,000 for new spill-over registrations.
