President Bola Tinubu has conferred a posthumous honour of Commander Federal Republic of Niger on the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja.
He said this during the burial ceremony of the late COAS in Abuja on Friday.
“Lieutenant Lagbaja had a clear understanding about the role of the military in securing and defending our country, it’s people.” he noted.
“He displayed uncommon valour, in the discharge of his duty and in the administration of the rank and file. For he cares about their welfare and that of their families.”
“I remember the passion with which he championed the payment of the oustanding group life assurance benefits to the families of deceased persons owing to his passion for the soldiers and colleagues.
“His tenure though brief earmarked a transformative period for Nigeria’s fight against insurgency. He embodied missionary military leadership. His passing on marks the end of an era that characterises exceptional military leadership.
“Throughout his military career, his legacy of service will be cherished forever.”
“As a symbol of our appreciation, I have granted late Chief of Army Staff, the post-humous national honour of commander of the federal republic of Nigeria (CFR)," the President stated.
Lieutenant Lagbaja's burial ceremony came with tributes from different quarters and eulogies for his time as Chief of Army Staff.
He served as Chief of Army Staff for one year and four months, serving from June 2023 till November 5, 2024.
