Three people have been confirmed dead in a plane crash that occurred in the Northeast of Slovenia on Sunday.

The AP reports that the plane crash occurred in foggy conditions near the village of Gančani, in the Prekmurje region of the country.

It was reported that the Cessna Skyhawk, which had been on a scenic flight, took off from Maribor airport at 11:20 am near a football field in Gančani, according to Robert Roudi of the Murska Sobota Police Department.

Also, The Slovenia Times reports that authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of people on board or released their identities, as investigations are ongoing.

"The examination of the crash site is still underway, and identities will be confirmed once it is completed," a police spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Along with officers, an investigating judge, prosecutor, aviation inspector, and forensic expert are all on the scene.

It was reported that all those on board were killed, and that the victims include two men, aged 30 and 33, from the Beltinci area, and a woman from the Štajerska region.

The flight was said to be a birthday gift for one of the passengers, who had planned a round-trip route from Maribor to Lendava.

The Cessna 172M Skyhawk was owned by the Maribor Aviation Centre. The flight initially took off in clear weather from Maribor, but dense fog in the Prekmurje region is believed to have contributed to the crash.
