The African Action Congress (AAC) has called on the Abia State government to provide a comprehensive breakdown of the expenses involved in the recently inaugurated Smart School, that has only one smart television with no required ICT gadgets.
AAC Abia State chapter made the demand in a statement issued on Friday in reaction to Governor Alex Otti's commissioning of the Ofali Agwu Digital Smart School, facilitated by the Member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, Ibe Okwara Osonwa on Wednesday, 28th November 2024.
While the party said in the statement signed by its state chairman, Ezumaibe Kelechiukwu, that it acknowledges the government's efforts to enhance educational infrastructure, it opined that it has become imperative to seek transparency regarding the financial aspects of the project, particularly given the limited resources allocated.
According to the party, the commissioning of a Smart School with only one smart television, no ICT and other required gadgets raises significant concerns about the true cost of this initiative.
"We demand a comprehensive breakdown of the expenses involved in the establishment of this facility. It is crucial for the public to understand how public funds are being utilised, especially in the education sector, which directly impacts the future of our children."
The party tasked relevant authorities involved to provide clarity on "the total cost of the Smart School project. Justification for the allocation of resources, particularly the decision to equip the school with only one smart television with no other ICT gadgets."
AAC also demanded that the authorities should provide plans for ensuring that the educational needs of Abia students are adequately met through the smart school initiative.
"The citizens of Abia State deserve accountability and transparency from their government. We call on all media houses to support this demand for clarity and to hold the authorities accountable for the educational welfare of our youth.
"We look forward to a prompt response and will continue to advocate for the interests of the people of Abia State."
