#EndBadGovernance: Victim's File Disappears From University Of Maiduguri Hospital Amid Police Harassment
December 23, 2024

The grenade had killed three of Muhammed’s friends while he has been receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).

The medical file of Muhammed Liman who had suffered spinal cord injury as a result of a grenade thrown by security personnel into A.A Kime filling station at Bolori Junction, Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, has disappeared.

The grenade had killed three of Muhammed’s friends while he has been receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).

Since the release of the Amnesty International’s report on the killing of at least 24 people during the August 1–10 protest, investigation by SaharaReporters showed that the police had been visiting Muhammed Liman’s hospital bed, asking his family questions, in what appears to be an attempt to intimidate the family of the victim.

A source at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital said: “Since the first visit to Muhammed Liman by a police team from Borno state command  two weeks ago, his medical file has disappeared from the hospital. The hospital could not provide any explanation as to where the file is. The family of the victim was not asked for consent or even notified on why the file disappeared.”

On the first day of #EndBadGovernance protests, Muhammed and his friends were working at A.A. Kime filling station, Bolori Junction in Maiduguri when a convoy of security personnel out to violently suppress the protests threw hand grenade at them — killing 3 of his friends instantly.

Muhammed Liman survived with a severe spinal cord injury.

Further investigation showed that the police had also visited the filling station, in a desperate bid to intimidate eyewitnesses.

Despite overwhelming evidence, including eyewitness accounts, videos, medical records, testimonies of the parents of victims and survivors, and photographs, the police have consistently denied involvement in the killings, dismissing them as “fake news” or attributing them to “unknown gunmen.”
