The incident, which occurred around 7 a.m. on Wednesday, has left at least 10 villagers dead and many others injured, according to local reports.
Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State has pledged support to victims of the tragic airstrike in Silame Local Government Area, where a Nigerian military fighter jet reportedly targeted terrorists but struck Gidan Bisa and Rumtuwa communities instead.
The incident, which occurred around 7 a.m. on Wednesday, has left at least 10 villagers dead and many others injured, according to local reports.
“It is with a heavy heart that I address you following the tragic incident in the communities of Gidan Bisa and Runtuwa in the Silame Local Government Area.
“This heartbreaking event, caused by an accidental misfire from the Nigerian Army, has claimed the lives of innocent citizens and left several others injured,” Governor Aliyu said.
The governor in a statement of his X handle extended his condolences to bereaved families and announced a relief package of N20 million and 100 bags of food for victims.
“We also pray for the swift recovery of those injured in this unfortunate incident,” he added.
SaharaReporters on Wednesday reported that the jet was targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group in Surame Forest but accidentally bombarded villagers.
Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Daftarana, chairman of Silame LGA, stated, “The villagers were sitting peacefully when bombs began dropping on the communities. These were innocent, peace-loving people with no criminal records.”
Governor Aliyu assured residents of a thorough investigation in collaboration with the Nigerian Army.
“I want to assure you that I am in direct communication with the leadership of the Nigerian Army to ensure a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to this tragedy,” he said.
“The state government will do everything within its power to support the affected families and engage with the relevant authorities to prevent such occurrences in the future.”
Calling for calm, the governor urged residents to remain united and pray for peace.
“May the Almighty comfort the bereaved families and grant eternal rest to the departed souls,” he concluded.
